FLORA & FAUNA.

FLORA & FAUNA.

The flora and fauna of Erku are quite bizarre, often springing up overnight as part of an Augur request or as the unintended consequence of an Auspicious Act. Here's some of what you might find.

🞃 flora

Love darts may shoot at characters who come too close, dosing them with enough aphrodisiac to make them little more than zombies driven by lust. Orgasm clears the mind.

Passionfruit inspires feelings of jealousy and clinginess, bordering on yandere (cw: blood) tendencies. No amount of contact can stop it. The effects wear off on their own within 24 hours.

Tentacle plants have vines that trap unsuspecting adventurers.

There's even a mysterious fruit that generates sweet, lubricating fluid.

Sunflowers now grow in abundance. You can buy one for your sweetheart from a little flower cart that's sprung up on one of the main streets.

Grape-producing vines have been spotted here and there.

Lotuses now grow in a large lake on the outskirts of the city.

Medicinal plants and herbs can be found in the interior mountains, known as Harpy Hills.

Marijuana has been added to the greenhouse!

A small orangery has been added to the greenhouse with five (5) navel orange trees and three (3) mikan orange trees.

Apple trees have arrived! One (1) Red Delicious, one (1) Granny Smith, and one (1) Fuji tree have been planted in the greenhouse’s budding orchard.

A rose garden has been planted outside the House of Worship. Two of the bushes are normal roses of different colors (red, pink, peach) that have no effect. The other three bushes are one color each and may carry some effects, but only to those who pick flowers from them and smell them up close.
  • Yellow: Yellow Roses create a sense of soft joy, fondness and admiration. You want to pamper someone and show them affection. You feel happy and want to share that happiness with others. Being pricked by a thorn will cause the opposite reaction. Sadness, anger and a desire to get revenge on some unknown slight.
  • Purple: Purple Roses create a sense of lust and passion toward whoever you see after smelling them. Lust at first sight. You want them, they want you, and it can build into a frenzy of needing to express that passion as quickly as possible. Being pricked by the thorns will cause the opposite reaction and you will feel immediately repulsed by the first person you see and desire to be as far away from them as you can
  • Blue: Blue creates a sense of the unattainable. Of pining and wishing for someone to look at you the way you do them. But you pine from a distance, hoping you might get to confess. Being pricked by a thorn will have the opposite reaction. You will desire and covet to the point you see someone as yours and you will do anything to make sure they know they belong to you.
These effects will last for up to four hours or until the completion of an auspicious act.

Lemon trees, sugar maples, green tea shrubs, blueberries, and strawberries have also arrived! The strawberries are a juicy aphrodisiac, the rumors say, especially when eaten with chocolate they may make someone feel particularly aroused and in the mood for carnal delights.

Five peach trees are eternally blossoming by the Unclean Realm.

The Venus Gleetrap Gardens is a botanical garden filled with a massive variety of plants from across all the worlds Islanders may have visited. In addition to the trees and flowers that Islanders might recognize from their homes, please enjoy these exotic beauties:
  • Venus Gleetraps, whose mischievous, toothy grins will occasionally reach out to playfully nip the fingertips or bums of Islanders who aren't looking - especially if those Islanders happen to be traveling with a companion who might take the blame.
  • The glowing honeybulbs fluoresce spectacularly at night, but occasionally burst to cover the observer in a sweet and sticky sap, which also glows in the dark. On the bright side, the sap tastes just like orange blossom honey! Many animals might find it very enticing.
  • Consider yourself lucky if you're able to catch the rare bloom of the Midnight Delight, a flower native to Erku which has inspired ancient legends due to its captivating beauty - as well as its hypnotic perfume, which is said to be an incredibly powerful aphrodisiac. The flower blooms for a single night each month!

Potato and wheat fields, as well as a flour mill, have sprung up to feed the masses.

🞃 fauna

Highly dangerous aphrodisiac-releasing bees are now part of your world.

A few types of fish reside in a small pond and in the ocean.

Chocobos reside in the stables and can be found at the racetrack, stretching their legs and warking around.

In the summertime, pinching crabs inspire feelings of friendship on the beach while beautiful luminescent jellyfish sting a powerful aphrodisiac into unsuspecting waders. The octopi are grabby, but otherwise harmless.

Please enjoy the return of butterflies!

Cats, dogs, and geese can be found roaming the island en masse.

Cherub Dragons have returned! These dragons cannot be domesticated as they have strong minds of their own, but they can take a liking to someone and decide to spend their time with that person.

Welcome Your Feathered Friends as more birds have been returned! Owls, Crows, Doves, Hawks, Turkeys, and Swans will now begin to be seen again throughout the Island.

Reindeer, rabbits, boars, red fox, and lynx have returned to the island!

Chickens and cows might be spotted on farmland.

The Doom-summoning Harbinger Bugs have awakened from their cocoons. Please be warned that being touched by a male or female (or BOTH) can have adverse effects. The caterpillars of this species also have potential effects.

🞃 cryptids

Monsters from the depths of your nightmares - awful bestial things with tough skin and sharp claws - now roam the depths of the expanse outside the city. Don't be surprised if you recognize a creature or two from home! (Or if you happen to receive a tentacle steak at the diner.)

Beware of harpies and don't forget your kitty ears while exploring the peaks of Harpy Hills!

The Mothman may be spotted in the dense forest at the hours closest to dawn and dusk.

🞃 player-added
Often, creatures and plants from characters' home worlds will mysteriously glitch into the wilderness of the Island. Post the plants and animals that other Islanders may encounter from your character's universe below! Please use "FLORA" or "FAUNA" as your subject line.

Name of Plant/Animal Creatures of Grimm

The Creatures of Grimm are soulless beasts whose sole purpose seems to be the destruction of humanity. They do not eat, they do not reproduce, and they can't be tamed, befriended, or kept in captivity. They are attracted by negative emotions such as fear or anger. There are many species of Grimm, but they all share a similar appearance: their bodies are pitch black with accents of red, and they are covered in tough bony plates of armor. Some can shoot lethal energy beams from their mouths or eyes. Grimm are vulnerable to human weapons and when killed, they dissipate into a black cloud of vapor.

(Here's a big grab-bag of D&D plants from open game license backgrounds. Feel free to pick and choose as you wish!)

Names of Plants
Assassin Vines are more dangerous versions of the tentacle plants found in Harpy Hills. They produce sweet, blackberry-like fruit that ferments into rich, sweet wine.

Bitter Tree a ghostly tree twisted to fit Erku's standards: it grows fruit vaguely the size and shape of a human head. When eaten, these fruits (or anything made of them) can charm the consumer to do the tree's bidding, slowly corrupting them into infernal creatures if they continue to eat of the fruit. The Bitter Tree is a masterful spell-caster, creating illusions, sharing thoughts between its charmed creatures, and dominating their consciousness in order to perform whatever intimate acts the creature might have been wanting subconsciously.

Bog Creepers are roughly human-sized logs that spray a sticky, lubricating fluid when threatened.

Cavelight Moss grows in the most shadowed areas of the forest and in caves. Its feathery tendrils are prehensile, and it acts like other tentacle plants in Erku. It provides dim illumination that leaves luminescent marks on anything that it touches, harmless spores that can be cultivated for natural light.

Forest Nymphs are waif-like guardians of the trees and can be negotiated with for food and resources. They viciously attack those that would harm their homes.

Gloomflowers are tiny ebony flowers on thorny bushes. In the wild, they can cause sudden frightful images to bombard a victim. When harvested and distilled, they can be made to suppress all fears for up to four hours.

Jinmenju are huge trees bearing white apples, each of which chuckles, giggles, or howls in laughter. Eating of the fruit causes joyful dreams the next night, and all experiences for the next 24 hours are funnier than they'd normally be.

Mandragora are demonic little plant-people with vine-whipping attacks. Their sap can be used in powerful scrying spells when properly refined.

Pixie's Umbrellas are small fungi named as they're shaped. When they sense danger, they puff up and float, spinning lazily and showering slowing spores in self defense.

Treants are peaceful, tree-sized cultivators of forests. They herd the larger flora of the forest to avoid dangers or migrate to better sources of light and water.

Witchgrass is a bushy, purple grass that inhibits magic. Its burrs, which are tiny and difficult to remove, have a similar effect.

Name: The Midgar Zolom
Reference: Here (mild gore warning) & and Here
Brief Description: The Midgar Zolom is a 30 feet tall monstrosity of scales and muscle in the form of an enormous cobra-like serpent. It typically dwells within the marshlands just a few yards from the Mythril Mine near Midgar. The Zolom appears as a gray serpentine shadow that swims just under the surface of the marshes. While it can be outfoxed on chocobo, the serpent is too fast for anyone to escape on foot.

It's basically a king cobra on steroids but it seems to act more like a boa constrictor since it tries to entangle its foes with its body. Of course, due to the limitations of the PSone, it was difficult to depict this. The Midgar Zolom is known for throwing folks across the damn landscape, so watch out for that.

Notes: Fun fact, the Midgar Zolom also makes an appearance in FFXV in this updated model here.

Name of Animal: Malboro/Malboros
A giant mouth with a ton of tentacles, no eyes, and a tendency to use a skill called Bad Breath, which causes blindness/poison/confusion/all of the above. Thankfully, it takes a deep breath before it does this. You can smell it a mile away.

If you want it to be sexy, it could use horny breath instead of a malodorous one??

It is disgusting.

Name of Plant/Animal Nekker
Nasty little imp-like beings with sharp claws and droopy, bloated necks (hence the name). They are agile and typically come in small groups. They're known to wear some sort of rudimentary clothing, like raggedy loincloths.

Nekker nests are used not only as a gathering area, but connect to one another with underground tunnels. The best (or rather, only) real way to destroy the nest, and stop the spread of nekkers in that area, is to drop a bomb into it. Silver does more damage to them than steel. There is a slightly larger, stronger variation of them called Nekker warriors.

Name of Animal Ghost Head Spider

The Ghost Head Spider is a demonic monster from the Demon Realm. Its form is that of what at first appears to be a human head, but when its legs are unfurled it reveals itself to be a human head-sized spider with terrible fangs and a thing of nightmares. They are fast and jump. Their main method of attack is jumping onto the face, piercing the skull through the temples, and then sucking the brain out.

The male spiders are the ones generally encountered, be glad you don't meet a female one.

Name of plant/animal: Foglet
Description: Bony, gangly creatures that can summon fog and move through it at will. They emit a faint light from their bare, open ribcage, which they use to lure potential targets into their trap. These are tricky creatures, capable of disorienting and deceiving people with fog and mimicry. Don't follow the light.

Name of plant/animal: Arachas (plural arachasae)
Description: Huge crab-spiders that are toxic and capable of shooting webbing. There are two variants: armoured and venomous. All arachasae are venomous, the latter just moreso. All but the venomous arachasae have large shells. Attacking from the front is not a choice strategy, as they can use their pincers and shell to block some of the damage. Go for the rear, or distract it, and strike at squishy unarmoured bits.
